Proxmox VE - The Good and Bad of Virtualization

Proxmox VE – The Good and Bad of Virtualization

What is Proxmox VE

Proxmox VE is an open-source virtualization platform that has gained popularity for its ease of installation and management. It allows users to create and manage virtual machines (VMs) and containers on a single platform, making it an attractive option for web design startups like Prolific Web Design. In this article, we will discuss the pros and cons of using Proxmox VE for virtualization, as well as troubleshooting tips and recommendations for those considering its use.

Pros

After one month of using Proxmox VE, it appears that containers run amazingly well on this platform. This makes Proxmox an invaluable addition to any web design startup’s toolkit. The ease of installation and management is another advantage, as users can quickly set up their virtual environment without the need for extensive technical knowledge.

Cons

However, when it comes to running VMs on Proxmox VE, the results are not as impressive. We have found that VirtualBox and QEMU KVM yield much better performance for virtual machines. This is an important consideration if you plan to use Proxmox VE for your web design startup’s needs.

Proxmox VE - The Good and Bad of Virtualization

Read before adding a second node to the cluster

If you are just starting out with Proxmox VE, it is essential to be cautious when adding a second node to the cluster. Do not join them right away because Proxmox did not work if one of them is not powered on. It is recommended to keep only one PVE per cluster unless you have experience and time for troubleshooting.

Removing a Proxmox Server from a Cluster

To remove a server from the cluster, log in via SSH and issue the following command:
pvecm status
Then, follow up with removing the other server using this terminal command:
pvecm delnode pve1 (make sure you use the actual name you have given your second server)
To check if it has been removed successfully, use the same command again in the terminal:
pvecm status

The Importance of Backups

Backing up your websites is crucial when using Proxmox VE or any other virtualization platform. It is essential to create regular backups and take snapshots whenever needed to ensure that you have a working copy of each site in case something goes wrong. Relying solely on the webserver’s daily backups can be risky, as they may not always capture all changes made to your sites.

To keep your data safe, it is recommended to run a mirror server locally and in-house. This will allow you to have an up-to-date copy of each website on hand at all times. Additionally, regularly testing the backup process can help identify any issues before they become critical problems. By prioritizing backups and ensuring that your data is securely stored, you can minimize downtime and protect your web design startup’s online presence.

Continued Investigation and Future Updates

In conclusion, Proxmox VE is an excellent virtualization platform with many benefits for web design startups like Prolific Web Design. While there are some limitations when it comes to running virtual machines, the performance of containers on this platform is impressive, particularly for WordPress sites.

The team and I will continue to investigate and tweak our setup in hopes of resolving any issues we have encountered with clustering multiple servers. If a solution can be found, I will update this review accordingly. In the meantime, we encourage others considering Proxmox VE 8 to take their time learning about troubleshooting techniques and weighing the pros and cons before making a decision.
